Packaging for a line of new products uses recyclable #1 PETE plastic for both the bottle and the sleeve, instead of using adhesive labels that can make normally recyclable bottles non-recyclable. Labels are printed with water-based inks. Shipping cartons are made of 100% post-consumer waste corrugated. Switching to PETE from HDPE reduced materials costs. Production is fueled by a combination of electricity and hot water, instead of steam, reducing energy costs by 50% in the first year.

Bissell continues improvements in its closed-loop manufacturing process for the Little Green®. Increasing the amount of post-consumer recycled (PCR) content of plastic, ABS and polypropylene, from 5.5% to 50% by weight increased the PCR content per unit from .36 lbs to 3.24 lbs. and reduced raw plastic resin by 2.88 lbs. per unit. Less fossil fuel is used for reprocessing resins than for virgin resin production.

Cartridges are molded with polypropylene, while the blister card and trays are produced from parts that range from 35% to 100% recycled board content.

The handles of the GoodNow™ line are made of 100% post-consumer, recycled paper—no new timber or plastic is used. Production uses 90% post-consumer recycled steel, petroleum-free resins and organic pigments. The 170-year-old factory is powered entirely by hydroelectric energy generated by the river that runs through it. The company uses/recycles 100% of the stainless steel used in manufacturing, and the wood shavings left after the handles are shaped go to local farms for livestock bedding.


Abaca Woven Wastebasket

Abaca is a rapidly growing tropical plant of the banana species whose leaves are made into fibers used to create ropes and paper-like products. The lightweight material was handcrafted into a tapered shape so that wastebaskets could nest, reducing the total weight while increasing the number of pieces packed into each shipping carton, also reducing fossil fuels in production and transportation. The wastebasket biodegrades when discarded.


Dish Dumpling

Dish Dumpling is a scrubbing pad made of dye-free, renewable, compostable materials—agave fiber sandwiched around a cellulose sponge in the middle—and packaged in an agave wrapper. The biodegradable pad is top-rack dishwasher safe, and can also be sterilized in the microwave or by boiling. Twist partners with Global Response, an international environmental action and education network.

Handmade papers, made of recycled fibers, are embedded with seeds and crafted into products that can be planted to grow flowers, trees, vegetables or herbs. The set of eight placemats and place cards can be planted to grow Shasta daisies. Recipe Bookmarks grow parsley, chives, basil, dill and cilantro. Made in New Mexico, the products use minimal or renewable packaging and low impact inks, and some are shipped with reused cartons and packing materials.

The poly bags are manufactured with a resin that breaks down into compostable elements when exposed to air and water, using EPI Environmental Technologies’ TDPA™ (Totally Degradable Plastic Additives).

LC Industries improved its 60% organic/40% plastic polymer flatware to create flatware made of 100% plant-based material. Fully compostable, it can withstand temperatures of 200ºF. Eliminating the use of petroleum-based raw materials reduced landfill disposal and fossil fuels for production. Now introduced to the consumer market, the utensils have been used primarily in federal government commissaries and by soldiers in the field. A non-profit company, LC Industries is the largest employer of blind people in the U.S.

The outer carton is made of recycled paperboard and is recyclable.

The Green Pan Dubai range uses the Thermolon ceramic coating, which requires less energy to apply than PTFE and has a higher heat resistance. The aluminum for the bodies is a minimum of 30% recycled and cast stainless steel handles use a minimum of 75% recycled materials. The pan was redesigned so that one handle fits all pieces, reducing tooling costs and materials waste, and disassembles easily. The pans stack compactly for consumers and for more efficient carton packing and shipping.

Loofah is a sustainable agricultural crop, a vegetable plant related to the cucumber. The scrubbers, colored with natural dyes, are made of 100% biodegradable loofah. Loofah-Art provides humanitarian and economic support to people in developing countries. Farmers have been trained and certified to grow loofah; craftsmen hand process, dye, sew, finish and package the products. Loofah-Art donates a percentage of sales to fund schools, medical care and decent living conditions.


MUbamboo Towels and Aprons

MUKitchen increased the amount of bamboo fiber in its towels, from 80% bamboo/20% cotton to 100% bamboo, and improved their durability by changing to a flat weave. Aprons were added to the product line. Fast-growing bamboo, grown without pesticides or chemicals, is a natural substitute for cotton which has a much larger environmental footprint. Woven bamboo is an ultra-soft fabric that stands up to tough daily use, is super-absorbent, fast-drying, and releases a natural anti-bacterial agent that reduces bacterial growth.


Eco Dust Pan and Brush

The Eco Dust Pan is made of recycled paper that contains minimal ink and with a thin lip of bamboo; the Brush is hand woven couch grass, a waste material. Both items are biodegradable and at the end of their lifecycles can be re-washed, remolded and rewoven. Both require very little machinery in production, reducing pollution. The lightweight products fit together, reducing the carton size while packing more pieces into the carton, reducing shipping costs.


FS-20 Steam Cleaning Floor Sanitizer

The FS-20 is a smaller, lighter weight version of the original HAAN floor sanitizer, reducing the carbon footprint in production, shipping and distribution. It requires less electricity during use, using 800 watts instead of the typical 1500 watts. The FS-20 steam cleans, sanitizes and dries floors using only water, eliminating the need for chemical cleaners. Its multi-layer cleaning pads are washable and reusable through hundreds of washings.


GreenLite Dishwasher Safe Cutting Boards

By reducing thickness and weight and making cutting boards dishwasher-friendly, Totally Bamboo improved upon its earlier products with the GreenLite line. Totally Bamboo uses only 5 year-old growth bamboo, which is denser and more stable than younger material. The lightweight, 3/8” GreenLite boards use less raw material, and less energy in milling, kiln-drying and transport. The “TriPly” construction uses a proprietary food-grade adhesive that withstands high temperature washings and is formaldehyde-free.
