IHA recently caught up with Jenny Guy and Stephie Predmore from Mediavine, speakers at our upcoming event, The Inspired Home Influencer Conference, which will kick off the 2019 International Home + Housewares Show. Mediavine offers full service ad management including display ad optimization, video monetization and sponsored influencer marketing for 4,300 + publishers with a combined publisher social media reach of 180MM.

Mediavine sells a platform for display ads that bloggers can use to make money on their sites, but you’re not talking about ad strategies during your session – you’re focusing on SEO?
Mediavine: Our goal and philosophy is about helping clients develop long-term sustainable content-based businesses. The last thing we want to do is swoop in with a quick fix that produces short-term revenue but long-term issues.

Just putting ads on a site that isn’t optimized for long-term growth and success might produce some initial revenue, but if the site falters because it’s not performing in terms of discoverability, traffic, user experience, etc. that ad revenue will dry up very quickly.

So it’s really an eco-system – SEO helps discoverability which helps build traffic which helps create a viable market for ads?
Mediavine: Exactly – and we work with content creators on any or all of these aspects. And user experience – that’s another big one. When users have a great experience on a site, their tendency to come back regularly and to engage goes up.

What kinds of issues do you see with user experience?
Mediavine: Specifically, once content creators begin offering ads on their sites, they often run into issues with site speed, which turns a user off very quickly. We work with them to ensure that monetizing their sites doesn’t inadvertently hurt their audience traction.
