As a preview to their presentation during the upcoming IBC Global Forum, the following is a brief on MercadoLibre, the leading Latin American e-commerce retailer.
MercadoLibre was established in August 1999 in Argentina and rapidly expanded to Brazil (as MercadoLivre.com), Mexico and other South American countries. It is the largest e-commerce retailer in Latin America, present in 18 countries including Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela and Peru. Based on unique visitors and page views, MercadoLibre is a market leader in each of the major countries where they are present, and the 8th most visited retailer in the world.
MercadoLibre is an online marketplace, it does not sell any products directly. It has over 166 million registered users, with more than 23 million active buyers. In 2016, MercadoLibre sold over 181 million items, 21.4 million of which were in the Home & Garden category, accounting for US$773 million in sales in this category alone. It has over 2,500 official Brand Stores, including major brands such as Walmart, Samsung, Black & Decker, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Simmons, and others.
Through their online commerce platform and related services, MercadoLibre provides their users with robust online commerce and payments tools that not only contribute to the development of a large and growing ecommerce community in Latin America (a region with a population of over 605 million people and one of the fastest-growing Internet penetration rates in the world), but also fosters entrepreneurship and social mobility. Their main focus is to deliver compelling technological and commercial solutions that address the distinctive cultural and geographic challenges of operating an online commerce and payments platform in Latin America.
During the IBC Global Forum taking place in Miami from September 17-19, Carlos Cernadas and Maximo Bach of MercadoLibre Argentina will speak in more detail about listing products on their e-commerce platform and successfully launching a Brand Store on their site.
