Pantone announced that Ultra Violet is Color of the Year 2018. “A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future.”

Historically, Ultra Violet has had a long standing as a powerful yet calming color, bringing to mind the mysteries of the night skies or an association with mindful practices. The cosmos provide vast intrigue of the unknown and what lies ahead, and purple often brings a calming effect to those seeking refuge from today’s busy world.

“We are living in a time that requires inventiveness and imagination. It is this kind of creative inspiration that is indigenous to PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. From exploring new technologies and the greater galaxy, to artistic expression and spiritual reflection, intuitive Ultra Violet lights the way to what is yet to come,” noted Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute.

Color has the ability to evoke deep feelings and convey powerful messages, and designers and brands should use color to not only provide strategic direction, but also to inspire and influence. Added Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, “The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
