As we sail into the new year, it’s time to batten down the hatches and prepare for some potential choppy waters. Here’s the latest on the looming port strikes and a rundown of what you need to know about the 2025-26 shipping season.

Port Strikes: A Storm on the Horizon?

Remember the port strike in October? Well, we might be
facing another one soon. The current contract expires on January 15th, just
five days before Trump’s inauguration. With the White House transition
underway, the pressure to resolve a strike quickly will be minimal.

Both sides seem to benefit from a strike…Here’s my take on
the situation:

  • Carriers:
A strike could drive West Coast rates up and cause major congestion,
leading to those hefty surcharges. Remember the 400,000 containers stuck at sea last time?
  • Longshoremen:
They’re likely to hold out for their automation demands, potentially
    prolonging the strike.

Chinese New Year: The Annual Frenzy

Don’t forget about the yearly chaos of Chinese New Year! If
you haven’t started planning for it, now’s the time.

2025-26 Contract Negotiations: Full Steam Ahead!

We’re in the midst of pre-negotiation meetings with members
and carriers for the 2025-26 season. Here’s a quick timeline:

  • Now:
Meeting with members and carriers (already visited Hyundai, Matson, MSC,
    Zim, Cosco, and ONE!)
  • January:
    Terms & Conditions
  • February
    – March:

    – April:

Shippers Association Update: Growing Stronger!

Exciting news! Our shippers association is on track to double, maybe even triple in size by 2025-26. New members are signing up now to
secure their space.

Important Reminders:

  • 2025-26
    Space:
We prioritize incumbent members, then new members based on the order we receive their signed agreements. Late agreements could mean lower priority, so don’t delay!
  • Incumbent Members: Please update your shipping information! We’re currently working with 2024-25 data.
  • Source Shifting: Planning to change sourcing locations? Most carriers are
open to it, but make sure they service your new origin. Also let us know
    these potential locations and volumes.

Key Takeaway: Be prepared! Ensure your carrier(s) can
handle both your current and potential future origins.
